In December, West Midlands based suppliers of
heat transfer equipment Wellman Graham Ltd delivered two Suction
Coolers and one Dehydrator Inlet Cooler, all "Helixchanger"
designs incorporating a double helix baffle arrangement, along with
two Discharge Coolers of a conventional shell and tube design, to
BP Exploration for installation on the Bruce and Rhum oil platforms
in the North Sea. This will see the successful completion of an
order awarded in May by AMEC Process and Energy Ltd, BP Exploration's
engineering partners for the project.
The heat exchangers range from 700mm I/d x 3000mm Long to 1370mm
I/d x 7800 Long, a key feature on all five heat exchangers being
the manufacture of the tubes and tubesheets from Titanium in Wellman
Graham's newly refurbished Clean Shop Bay housed in the Wellman
Group manufacturing facility. Here strict procedures are observed
in order to protect the Titanium from contamination, especially
during the welding process, an essential condition of order placement.
The ability to offer the Helixchanger option was another key element
on this project. With many benefits over conventional shell and
tube exchangers, the Helixchanger provides reduced shellside fouling,
higher heat transfer rates and lower shellside pressure drop, as
well as many other advantages. The potential for significantly reducing
operational costs through reduced maintenance requirements and improved
performance is an attractive alternative for oil platform installation
operators who are often involved with frequent and costly maintenance
programs.
Wellman Graham Ltd also design and manufacture Condensers and Vacuum
