As odd as it may seem, all human history can be divided into two time periods. The first stretches from the dawn of our species until the year 1859. And the second, from that date forward.
What happened in 1859 to so vastly change our lives?

An out-of-work railroad conductor and self-styled "colonel" drilled a hole in the ground for the express purpose of recovering what was then known as "rock oil."

Petroleum gave us a new source of energy. It provided the hydrocarbon building blocks which made our technological leaps of the 20th century possible.

Since that first well, the search for new supplies of petroleum has been unending. As early as 1889, prospectors began drilling in shallow water.
