This text provides a thorough description of an aerodynamic design and analysis system for axial-flow compressors. It describes the basic fluid dynamic and thermodynamic principles, empirical models and numerical methods used for the full range of procedures and analytical tools that an engineer needs for virtually any type of axial-flow compressor aerodynamic design or anlysis activity. It reviews and evaluates several design strategies that have been recommended in the literature or which have been found to be effective. Modern axial-flow compressor aerodynamic design and analysis technology is so often proprietary and the role of computers is so pervasive that about the only way this subject can be described today is to concentrate on a specific system. Here, the author provides a complete description of an actual working system, with particular emphasis on: practical methodology that can easily be implemented on a personal computer; detailed descriptions sufficient to implement and apply all or part of the system; integration of the various methods into an efficient design and analysis system; core topics of performance prediction, aerodynamic design and internal flow analysis; novel topics such as an efficient multistage compressor design procedure and application to working fluids requiring a non-ideal gas equation of state; and many design examples to evaulate and demonstrate a variety of design strategies.
