5 Things About the Sephora Credit Card

Only very frequent Sephora customers would find the limited rewards program and expiration policy sensible. Even then, the savings are minimal.

The Sephora family of credit cards, issued by Comenity Bank, are store credit cards that offer additional incentives for shopping at Sephora. However, rewards on non-Sephora purchases are either minimal or nonexistent, depending on the card you qualify for. Unless you shop at Sephora regularly, the benefits may not be significant.

In most cases, a general cash-back credit card is a better option.

1. Two Versions of the Card Exist

Your credit history and financial situation will determine which Sephora credit card you may qualify for:

  • Sephora Credit Card – Can only be used at U.S. Sephora stores and on the Sephora website.
  • Sephora Visa Credit Card – Can be used anywhere Visa cards are accepted.

Both cards have no annual fee ($0).

2. Sephora Purchases Earn More Benefits

At U.S. Sephora stores and on the Sephora website, both cards offer 4% back in rewards per $1 spent.

  • The Sephora Visa Credit Card also earns 1% back on all other purchases.
  • New Sephora Visa cardholders (as of November 2024) can earn a $20 rewards bonus after spending $500 outside Sephora in the first 90 days.

While 4% back is valuable, the Visa card does not offer strong rewards for other types of spending. If you want better overall rewards, consider alternatives such as:

  • Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express – Earns 3% back at U.S. supermarkets, gas stations, and online retail stores, on up to $6,000 annually in each category. Terms apply.
  • Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card – Offers 2% cash back on all eligible purchases, making it a solid all-purpose card. It also includes a $200 sign-up bonus after spending $500 in the first three months.

3. Sephoras Inside Other Retail Spaces Do Not Count

The 4% rewards rate applies only to standalone Sephora stores. Purchases made at Sephora locations inside department stores or other retailers do not qualify.

However, shopping online at sephora.com will still earn the 4% rewards rate.

4. Credit Card Rewards Complement the Beauty Insider Program

Sephora cardholders are automatically enrolled in Beauty Insider, Sephora’s loyalty program.

This allows customers to earn both credit card rewards and Beauty Insider points on eligible purchases, making it easier to accumulate rewards for future savings.

5. Reward Redemption Is Limited

Sephora credit card rewards can only be redeemed at U.S. Sephora stores or on sephora.com.

  • 125 reward points = $5 in Sephora credit.
  • Rewards are issued in $5 increments.
  • Reward dollars expire after 18 months.
  • Once a $5 reward is issued, you have 90 days to use it.

The short expiration period makes it difficult to save rewards for a large purchase. If you're hoping to use points for a high-end beauty product, this restriction may be frustrating.

Final Thoughts

The Sephora credit card is best suited for frequent Sephora shoppers who can consistently maximize the 4% rewards and redeem them before they expire. Otherwise, a general cash-back credit card provides more flexibility and long-term value.
